Can Your PC Run Dark Souls?

Posted by Adam Beck on 21 Jun 2012

Namco Bandai and From Software are still developing the PC version of Dark Souls, but a small update has been posted on their Steam profile. The system requirements have been released and while this isn’t necessarily big news, given the concern and anxiety over the port, it’s something fans can evaluate and start probing.

OS: Windows XP , Windows Vista, Windows 7, or newer
Processor: 2.6 GHz Dual-Core
Memory: 1 GB (XP), 2GB (Vista/7)
Hard Disk Space: 4 GB
Video Card: 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 4850 or higher, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT or higher
DirectX®: 9.0c
Sound: Direct Sound Compatible
Additional: Multiplayer requires microphone headset support

When we have 30 GB PC games, such as Max Payne 3, it makes you wonder what the developers are doing when the hard drive space requirement is only 4 GB. How much are they improving and what is being added are the biggest questions now, especially considering you can find that the Xbox 360 version was around 8 GB large. To go from eight to four will raise eyebrows, for sure.

Oddly enough, it says multiplayer requires microphone and headset support, which is strange considering the console versions didn’t support this. In fact, From Software went out their way to ensure there was complete anonymity when playing coop or fighting against hostile phantoms. Here’s hoping there will be the ability to invite friends into your game as that would do well in the PC community.

The rest of the stats look relatively positive, offering reasonable requirements for a port of one of the best games of last year. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition ships to PC August 24th, and hopefully fans support it.
