As 2012 began, rumors swirled about a new portable Neo-Geo system being made available. Now, roughly seven months later, concrete information has been released about it. The press release states that the Neo-Geo X Gold will not only be a portable with a 4.3 inch screen loaded with 20 games, but include an expansion slot (type unknown) for more games. All of this with HDMI playback. The included game roster is 3 Count Bout, Art of Fighting II, Alpha Mission II, Baseball Stars II, Cyber Lip, Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury Special, King of Fighters ’95, King of the Monsters, Last resort, League Bowling, Magician Lord, Metal Slug, Mutation Nation, Nam 1975, Puzzled, Real Bout – Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Shodown II, Super Sidekicks (sadly, it doesn’t include Robin), and World Heroes Perfect.
The Neo-Geo X Gold will sell for $200 in December, giving you not only a portable system, but also an adorable charging cradle and an arcade-quality joystick. Considering that carts alone sold for $250 back in the day, the price isn’t as bad as it may seem. Many SNK fans will probably be satisfied with the myriad of PS2 compilations out there, but for those seeking games that aren’t on those (like 3 Count Bout in my case), this is an appealing way to legally own Neo-Geo classics and make your own little home (or mobile) arcade in the process.
