Street Fighter Turns 25

Posted by Steve Hannley on 29 Aug 2012

It may be hard to believe, but 25 years ago this day, Street Fighter debuted in arcades worldwide. While the series didn’t gain widespread fame until its sequel four years later, it started a revolution in fighting games that still rages on three decades later. If anything, popularity of the franchise has grown, with the majority of tournaments worldwide featuring the latest incarnation as the centerpiece. With 33 million units sold in its life span, it’s no surprise why.

So Happy Birthday, Street Fighter. You’ve filled countless hours of our lives with joy (or frustration, depending on your skill level). Even those not old enough (or born) to play the original surely have fond memories playing the series with friends growing up.

Here’s to 25 more.

One day I plan to expose my child to no American history besides what they can pick up from playing Assassin's Creed III. Then I'm going to drop him or her into a Social Studies class and mildly enjoy the outcome. I'm going to be a great father.
