New Metal Gear Games and Even a Film

Posted by Adam Beck on 30 Aug 2012

During Konami’s 25th anniversary event for the Metal Gear franchise, a whole slew of products were announced, most of which came to us as a surprise.

First, there will be a new Metal Gear Solid game for undisclosed platforms titled Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. Ground Zeroes will be running on Kojima Productions’ Fox Engine, and according to reports, the demo showed off was being played on a PC running on current-generation specs – so expect a Playstation 3 and possibly Xbox 360 launch. The main character, storyline and overall premise of the game has not been announced, but based on the image they released to the public, it does look like it follows Big Boss; that or Sam Fisher grew a mullet.

Secondly, GREE will be handling a Metal Gear social game titled… well Metal Gear: Social Ops. This will be a smartphone game (with the possibility of releasing on tablets) for iOS and Android devices that is developed through Unity. Following the adventures of Big Boss, Social Ops will have a card-based battle system and gameplay elements from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Lastly, and probably the biggest news, is that Hollywood is looking to adapt the Metal Gear Solid franchise into a full-length feature film. Avi Arad, best known for his work on a number of Marvel movies (such as Spider-Man, X-Men and Iron Man), took the stage at the event to announce his involvement with the project, along with Columbia Pictures. Unfortunately, even with Avi backing the film, chances are slim the movie will come out being that the famed producer announced long ago that he was working on films for the Mass Effect, inFAMOUS, Lost Planet and Uncharted franchises, and they have yet to come to light.
