Interview: PES 2013 Brand Manager Tim Blair

Posted by Steve Hannley on 10 Sep 2012

We recently had the chance to sit down with PES Brand Manager Tim Blair to talk about PES 2013, the latest in the long-running soccer (or football for our international friends) franchise.

[Hardcore Gamer] With Full Control, to what extent has ball-handling improved versus PES 2012?

[Tim Blair] The implementation of 360 controls and the passing power gauge implemented in past versions of PES is taken to a entirely new level. Players can break from the AI and actually control each player to go where they need to in order to make, receive or intercept a pass. The other the very important improvement that goes hand-in-hand with the ball-handling is the manual passing and manual shots. This presents both a new challenge to the most seasoned of PES players, but once mastered leaves players experiencing the beautiful game at a whole new level.

[HG] Players better represent their real-life counterparts thanks to PlayerID. Was this a challenge to implement?

[TB] No and they will find this a welcomed upgrade. Thus far, fans who have played have really enjoyed the way their defenses shift not only north and south on the pitch, but also east and west to adjust to the attack. On the offensive side, your team mates will more intuitively make runs into open space so that you can really put the Full Control to use. The ProActive AI on both offense and defense creates a well balanced game experience.

[HG] One draw to PES has always been that it is more inviting than other soccer (football) games. While the game has become deeper, will the accessibility to casual players be impacted?

[TB] No not at all. Although features like PES FC and ProActive AI can make the game more technical and provide challenges to the seasoned PES faithful, new users can still enjoy this with ease. By manipulating the level of difficulty and the levels of assistance, you can create a more inviting first game experience and then as players progress, learn how to use the features like PESFC, they can really take their game up to the next level. They can then readjust these settings to provide more of a challenge, thereby allowing them to really show their skills against their friends.

PES 2013 is due out September 25th. Make sure to check out our hands-on preview and keep an eye out for our forthcoming review.

One day I plan to expose my child to no American history besides what they can pick up from playing Assassin's Creed III. Then I'm going to drop him or her into a Social Studies class and mildly enjoy the outcome. I'm going to be a great father.
