While it’s not exactly rare for a game to be removed from a console’s downloadable service, it’s not common that it happens to a high-profile game without warning. That’s exactly what happened today when users looking to download the original SimCity (SNES) on Nintendo’s Virtual Console found it was no longer listed.

Losing a twenty-one year old downloadable game is certainly not a tragedy, but it’s unfortunate for those wanting to experience the original game before the reboot is released — which leads to speculation. Did Maxis request it removed to avoid confusion with their latest iteration of the franchise (both dubbed the same name)? Could Nintendo have removed it to prevent complications with the March release of said game?
