Fans of the Pokémon series may have noticed a bit of an update circulating the web about a certain legendary. Zygarde will have the ability to change forms as was revealed in recent screenshots and trailers for its upcoming debut in Pocket Monsters XY Special Episode: The Strongest Mega Evolution ~Act IV~ coming out in Japan next month. It’s nothing new for Pokémon to go through some crazy changes, but this one is kind of different since it’s been a few years since Zygarde first appeared. Meanwhile Hoopa, a previously hidden Pokémon, starred in its own movie ahead of Zygarde. Even Greninja is receiving a bit of a makeover! The timeline of events comparing the movies and games are out of order which is why it may be worth noting how this will affect the video games.
Pokémon XY is the game Zygarde made its debut in. While the legendary is tucked away in a cave and only reachable when you beat the Pokémon League, there’s no real use for it. Yes, you need one to complete the Pokédex but Zygarde isn’t anything special besides having legend-like stats. So, what Game Freak can do for Zygarde is give Pokémon XY a new update. They’ve had previous updates in the past to fix game-breaking glitches, so it’s possible to add new content. Although, this is the least likely possibility for Zygarde. XY has been practically obsolete since Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby came out, so there’s no reason for this to happen. There’s still a chance however since you can’t find Zygarde in ORAS.
It could be possible to update this game instead of XY. Seeing as it’s the most recent Pokémon game, it’s the most likely choice between the two. Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby came with more Mega Evolutions and features new forms for Hoopa which makes it possible for Zygarde to have its various forms present. If Hoopa is able to unbound itself, there’s no reason Zygarde can become perfect. Though, this would mean it would have to happen in a similar manner. Trainers may need a special item to unlock the powers or they’ll come up with something new, such as a specific Mirage spot to enter. It does seem a bit unlikely that ORAS will get an update as well since it’s been several months without any significant update to the game.
While there’s no doubt something new is coming and new forms are noteworthy, perhaps it’s all being built up too much. We’re especially wary of whats to come since Greninja is going through an odd transformation. Zygarde’s is understandable, but in one weird image, Greninja is looking more like Ash from the Pokémon anime and that ain’t right. This is very peculiar, probably unwanted and definitely impossible to pull off. Apparently, Greninja and Ash have such a strong bond that he’s beginning to look like his trainer. Now, that’s fine because this Pokémon is a ninja and trying to blend in with its surroundings..? That’s the only thing we can come up with because it couldn’t work in the game. It’ll get messy if Greninja, or any other Pokémon for that matter, start looking like trainer sprites. Why is Greninja chosen anyway, why isn’t his long-time pal Pikachu the one changing? Players are able to customize their clothing in XY, so if Pokémon are going to look like trainers, they’ll constantly be changing. We can only hope Game Freak decides to ditch this idea for the games or at least give us some more clues.
This is a bit of a long-shot but still has a good possibility of coming true. The Pokémon series is going to celebrate its 20th anniversary soon and what’s a better way to celebrate than introducing a brand new generation of monsters. The new Zygarde forms could be some kind of lead into creating Gen VII, there’s definitely a lot going on that we don’t understand yet; enough to create a new world perhaps. If that’s the case, perhaps the Ash Greninja is part of that area. Mega Evolved Pokémon debuted in Kalos so what’s to say this trainer hybrid won’t come to fruition at some point. We will have to wait and see what’s to come from all the magazine images and movie trailers, maybe we’ll get a bit of hint during the final scene like they did to introduce Zygarde.
Yes, this is without a doubt the safest assumption to make for what’s to come. There is history to back up this guess because ever since the debut of dual Pokémon versions, there’s always a third entry. Why would Game Freak start with X and Y and not end with Z? There’s even proof with footage straight from Pokémon itself, even a logo. Based on that, the evidence seems sound. All these Zygarde shapes mean there’s a story we’ve yet to hear. The little cell babies, the dog form and the giant looking version are all part of something huge. Why does a dog turn into a snake then a titan? With a brand new storyline, possible new areas and all those forms, Pokémon Z will be something well worth the wait. It will hold us over until they decide to make another generation. We will find out soon when the next special movie is released. Until then, rest assured we’ll get Pokémon Z.
