The Sitdown: Firewatch is the Park Ranger Simulator We Always Wanted

Firewatch is the sort of game that wouldn’t have existed ten or more years ago. Not only would the sheer concept of creating a game centered around a park ranger be unthinkable, but even if it were somehow greenlit, gamers far and wide would laugh it off as a joke. Yet not only has said game happened with Firewatch, but it also happens to be one of the most beautiful and artistic games of the past few years. Okay, so it’s a little more than a mere park ranger simulator (only you can prevent misconceptions), but Firewatch is still quite avant-garde. Matt Whittaker joins Steve Hannley to discuss what exactly Firewatch is, if its short running time gets in the way of its worth and if a game with so little action and characters can truly be intriguing.

And if you can’t get enough of Firewatch, be sure to check out our review.

The official podcast for HardcoreGamer.com, The Sitdown is an intimate one-on-one conversation about a single game. Generally in the form of a review or preview, the writer who’s been playing the game sits down with our host to discuss it in finer detail. We’ll always choose an interesting, new game, generally before its launch for this briskly informative conversation.

I don’t know about you, but my idea of a great park ranger sim would be one that lets me protect picnic baskets from talking bears.
