Hearthstone Talks Year of the Mammoth, Retires Classic Cards

Earlier today in a Hearthstone blog post Blizzard Entertainment detailed what their digital card game will look like in 2017 which they’re calling the Year of the Mammoth. Typically we would be gearing up for two new expansions and a new adventure but the changes are wider than just added cards.

First on the chopping block are a few standout cards from Hearthstone’s Classic Set which was supposed to be a collection that you could count on using no matter what the season was. Azure Drake, Sylvanas Windrunner, Ragnaros the Firelord, Power Overwhelming, Ice Lance and Conceal are now all part of the Hall of Fame which means they are only usable in Wild format. Coming in fast to lessen the blow is the announcement that players will receive the maximum amount of dust for each card you own in the Hall of Fame set and you won’t even need to destroy them to receive it. Among other things Hearthstone will now see three 130-card expansions over the course of each year. This is up from the normal expansion-adventure-expansion rollout of new content.

The new set rotation will start when the first expansion releases in 2017 and will cause Blackrock Mountain, The Grand Tournament and League of Explorers cards to become Wild format exclusive.
