Total War: Warhammer brought a classic table top game to the digital space with style. For those new to the series though, there is a lot going on under the hood of the Warhammer universe. That’s why having handy dandy videos to accompany the news of Total Warhammer 2 is just so wonderful. In this first video to come from developer Creative Assembly they give an excellent breakdown of the world at large in the Warhammer universe.
While the first trailer showed off a few new races that would be joining the fray off all-out-war. It also showcased the central pillar they are rallying behind. Whether for gain, glory or preserving the peace. The most starkly obvious thing is that there is a massive magic vortex of some sort just hanging out in the sky. Also, all the races in the trailer seem to be fighting over it. This vortex — The Great Vortex, is the pillar. This will be the main meat of Total War: Warhammer 2.
If the first Total War: Warhammer was about domination. The Great Vortex is about narrative. It is a mechanic that the player will always have to be aware of whether they care about it or not. It allows for the player to lose the game not just because they were crushed by another army. It also opens the door for the lore that already exist in the Warhammer universe. Anyone familiar with Warhammer probably immediately noticed not only three distinct races, but also the lords that accompany them.
The High Elves, lead by the most powerful magic user in Warhammer, Teclis. Don’t mess with this guy, he’ll wreck your day. Followed by that is the Dark Elves lead by supreme evil Malokith. If this guy doesn’t already look evil enough, just wait. He’s the biggest baddie out there. And, finally (a personal favorite) the lizard men lead by glorious Lord Mazdamundi. He’s a freaking fat lizard floating with magic, what’s not to love? So, those are all the folks in the trailer. They aren’t just fighting though, they have goals — visions.
The final bit of news out of all of this is that Total War: Warhammer 2 is taking place on an entirely different landmass. Creative Assembly states that they wanted to roll out Total War: Warhammer 2 in a way that would ease players into the universe. Going west, The Great Vortex hangs out above the land of Ulthuan. This is one of three major landmasses for Warhammer. Binding the world even more for Total War: Warhammer 2. It also explains why the Lizard Men showed up, they do live in Lustria after all.
