Back in 2014, Inti Creates decided to whip up a little 3DS game called Mighty Gunvolt, a cute crossover between the then-recently released Azure Striker Gunvolt and the then-upcoming Mighty No. 9 (with Ekoro from GalGun thrown in as a bonus) to help promote the two Mega Man successors. Things may not have turned out that great for the latter since then, but Inti still believe in the charming character designs of the Mighty No. 9 world. And so with permission from Comcept and announced today at BitSummit, the two are back for an official sequel, Mighty Gunvolt Burst, due out for Nintendo consoles next month.
The classic retro side-scrolling action of the original is on display again, this time made to resemble an area in between the 8-bit and 16-bit eras as Beck and Gunvolt navigate a strange virtual realm mixing together both worlds. As seen in the trailer below (where they apparently still have issues getting a good announcer), the focus this time around is on Burst Combos that can be achieved by defeating enemies at point blank range and chaining them together, resulting in a higher score. Also included is a deep customization system for your attacks, collectable pixel stickers, and the ability to use the Switch’s HD Rumble feature to detect hidden areas.
Could Mighty Gunvolt Burst help give the Mighty No. 9 world a slight revitalization, even with a smaller game? That has yet to be seen, but regardless, it definitely looks like another fun old-school action game from Inti Creates. And we won’t have to wait long for this duo to dazzle us again, as Mighty Gunvolt Burst is due out on June 15 for the Nintendo Switch, with a release for the 3DS following two weeks later on June 29, so keep your eyes peeled for it.
