In case you missed it, Dead Island was announced today to have a “Game of the Year” edition coming out June 26th on PS3, 360 and PC for $29.99. It will feature the original game along with DLC.
It’s a great deal for those who missed out on the original release, but titling it “Game of the Year” is almost as annoying as that GOTY Batman cover. I’m not hating on Dead Island — it was a fun diversion and one of the better recent zombie games. But the “Game of the Year” moniker should be reserved only for games that actually were considered top games of the year, not games with middling reviews (Dead Island scored a 71/100 average at Metacritic).
There’d be nothing wrong with this rerelease under a different byname, but giving games undeserved titles is just going to lead to more retail trickery. This needs to be stopped before some kid picks up X-Men Destiny Game of the Year Edition expecting to have a great summer.
