Before he became the lewd squirrel we know him as, Conker was originally destined to be a family friendly gaming icon. After debuting on the Game Boy Color, Conker was to make its console debut with Twelve Tales: Conker 64. Nearing release, Rare felt the game was too generic and scrapped in favor of a more “mature” project. Besides some screenshots in magazines, not much else has been seen from the N64 game until now.
Thirty minutes of Twelve Tales gameplay footage, which went unseen for 13 years, was acquired and uploaded by RareMinion, a website devoted to chronicling cancelled Rareware games. It’s a shame the game was canned, as it looks like a blast (and graphically strong for an N64 game). With a bright, colorful world and lighthearted music, it’s certainly a departure from Conker’s Bad Fur Day.
Check out the video below. Watching it is sure to make you miss the days of colorful platformers like Conker, Gex, Glover, Banjo Kazooie that seemed to have escaped us.
