Contrary to Rumors, WipEout Remains in Limbo.

As many were heartbroken when Sony announced the closure of Wipeout developers Studio Liverpool, it’s understandable that after weeks on silence, social media updates would be exciting. That happened today when the official WipEout 2048 twitter tweeted “WE ARE ALIVE” and updated their Facebook with the following message:

“Good afternoon Pilots

As you may be aware; Studio Liverpool shut its doors on the 22nd of August 2012.

It was a very sad day- the end of an era and will never be forgotten. While we wait for news on the future of WipEout, Online play will continue to be supported and there will be plenty of WipEout community events, giveaways and goodies to look forward to!

WipEout’s passion will live on – Together we are stronger and together we will keep WipEout alive.

WE ♥ WO!”

While initially reported that this meant the series would be transferred to another company or Liverpool would live on, it’s more likely that Sony has simply transferred maintenance of the online functionally and social media presence to an unknown source.

This comes contrary to swirling rumors that Sony will hand over the series to UK developer Evolution Studios, who would certainly be right at home with it. While it’d be a happy ending (besides everyone at Liverpool losing their jobs), there’s been absolutely nothing to confirm the basis of these claims, besides media outlets regurgitating it without validating the story.

We’d love to believe WipEout was picked up, but unfortunately, it simply hasn’t happened yet. A series as recognized as WipEout is sure to live on, but the fact that the online community will continue to exist doesn’t mean another developer has the reigns.
