Jagex Announces Runescape 3 for Summer 2013

The most popular free to play MMORPG is scheduled to receive a fairly significant upgrade this summer. Jagex announced in their latest behind the scenes video that their signature franchise Runescape will be receiving a major facelift with the upcoming release of Runescape 3. If you happen to be one of the 220 million individuals that have already put some time into Runescape, you won’t have to worry about starting over from scratch as both your account and avatar will carry over. Runescape’s Executive Producer, Phil Mansell, describes Runescape 3 as a “massive update to Runescape building on 12 years of content to make improvements on all fronts.”

They are certainly hyping the technological improvements of Runescape 3, noting that they will be operating on a new fully HTML5 engine that allows for improved graphics, better draw distances, improved audio, and all sorts of other things that basically mean it’ll be prettier. So far, Mansell describing Runescape 3 as an update sounds just about right, and currently this sounds less like Runescape 3 and more like Runescape 1.3 as all their current statements seem to revolve around how nice it will look. For now, they are being fairly quiet about the specifics of Runescape 3, so it is possible that the upgrades will be more massive and far reaching in scope. They are teasing that “massive changes” will occur to the game world as well, but we will have to wait for future updates to see what exactly that details. Jagex promises more updates in the upcoming weeks, and we’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
