Senior Game Designer Peter Johansson Talks About Why You Should Be Excited for Mad Max

It should come as no surprise that we here at Hardcore Gamer are eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Mad Max game. What can we say? We’re suckers for ramming cars over onto their side, while leaning out of the window and clearing off chumps clinging to our hood with our trusty shotgun. We had the privilege of sitting down with Peter Johansson, Senior Game Designer at Avalanche Studios, to talk about one of the best titles shown at E3. In our time with him, he talks about what sort of weapons you can expect, cars you can drive, and what inspirations the game draws from Just Cause.

[Hardcore Gamer] Is Mad Max being developed as a tie-in to the upcoming film, or will it be its own thing?

[Peter Johansson] No, this is a completely original take. It is based on the Mad Max universe, but it is a completely original game. We worked very hard with staying true to the Mad Max universe, of course, to make sure it was a really authentic experience. Other than that, it is a completely original take on it. Of course, Mad Max is the same. [laughter]

Is it going to come out near the movie?

It is scheduled for release in 2014.

How influenced by Just Cause were you when working on Mad Max?

Oh man, I mean, working on Mad Max is a dream come true for us. It is like a match made in heaven, basically. It translates so well into what we love the most, like creating these huge worlds, giving a lot of player freedom, throwing you into a lot of action. So, basically, that is what we get the opportunity to do working on Mad Max. It is just perfect for us. And, of course, we use a lot of the experience we learned from the Just Cause games and are taking that to an even higher degree in this game.

How many different cars can you drive in the game?

There are over fifty cars to drive. You can drive them all. Of course, the most important car is the Magnum Opus, this ultimate war machine of the wasteland that you are building. But, there are over fifty in total that you can drive.

Does story play a big role in the game? Is there a lot of story?

Yes, we worked hard on making a story that ties very well into the Mad Max universe. Magnum Opus is a core part of that story. You need to build this vehicle because your Interceptor gets stolen, and what you need to do to stay alive in this harsh environment is to have a vehicle. That is why you are building this Magnum Opus.

Is this one of the biggest worlds you’ve created so far?

Yes, it is definitely huge. I don’t have an exact number for what size it is, but it is a big world. That’s what we’re all about. Doing these huge worlds, filling it with lots of content, and giving you a lot of freedom to just explore this world. And that’s what you’ll be doing. Exploring this world, gathering scraps for the resources that you need to stay alive, and building this Magnum Opus.

How many weapons can we expect in this game?

We have a lot of weapons that you can fit on the vehicle, your Magnum Opus. There are also opportunities to step out of your vehicle, or maybe you get pulled out of your vehicle, and you have to engage in melee combat. There you can use a variety of melee weapons, a knife, or your iconic shotgun. These are integrated into both melee combat and vehicle combat.

Mad Max will find release sometime in 2014. We will continue to provide all updates on the title as they are made available.
