Hey, Nintendo finally gave us an interesting Smash Bros. update! While they had been content to throw us scraps in the form of a couple of screenshots here and there to bide us over, today we actually received some meatier information to gnaw on. Captain Olimar was confirmed for the roster of the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game on the WiiU and 3DS, and he’s bringing all his Pikmin with him. This is actually a fairly meaningful announcement as not only did we learn of Olimar’s return, but he was one of the fringe characters from Brawl whose return wasn’t guaranteed. If the lead-up to this game is anything like Brawl, hopefully there will be a fairly steady stream of characters slowly leaked as we approach its release.
Pikmin 3 is out in Japan tomorrow, so this is indeed a timely announcement. Perhaps we’ll see more announcements coinciding with upcoming releases. Perhaps a Zelda announcement for Wind Waker HD or Link to the Past 2? Maybe Luigi to hype the North American Dream Team release? Bayonetta right before Bayonetta 2 drops? Hmm? HMMMMMMM?
Nintendo uploaded a whole slew of pictures to celebrate this momentous occasion, and they show off Olimar in combat with most of the other previously confirmed characters. Strangely enough, there doesn’t seem to be any indication of any rock or flying Pikmin yet, which is weird because it seems likely Nintendo will try to work Pikmin 3 into Captain Olimar’s moveset somehow. Feel free to check out all the Captain Olimar related goodness below, or you can just skip them and check out the very best picture in the bunch, which finally answers the much debated question: do Pikmin fear death? Yes. Yes they do.
