September 2013 turned out to be a very lucrative month for the games industry. This was the first month since January 2013 to see positive growth compared to the previous year. Total sales came to $1.709 billion, which is up a tremendous 27%. The industry has Grand Theft Auto V to thank for such a large jump as it accounted for 50% of all sales.

Nintendo’s 3DS managed to claim the top spot on the hardware chart for the fifth-consecutive month in a row. The recent release of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y are highly suspected to help keep it at the top for the month of October.
However, the real interesting part comes from the home consoles. After 32 straight months of beating the PS3, the Xbox 360 has finally been defeated as the best-selling home console of the month. This is the first time the PS3 has beaten the Xbox 360 in North America since December 2010. The NPD notes that the Grand Theft Auto V PS3 Bundle was most likely what helped Sony’s console beat Microsoft’s.
Wii U sales were up 100% in September thanks to the introduction of the $50 price cut and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD was only released digitally in September therefore why it isn’t on the charts (NPD only tracks physical sales)
