The next-gen is a few weeks away. Microsoft is making its claim to gamer’s attention with Xbox One, the third Xbox console. To do this, Microsoft is launching an aggressive and expensive marketing campaign in the hope of over-taking Sony’s PlayStation 4.
Titled ‘Invitation,’ the trailer features characters from games, films and sports. You can tell Microsoft is going all out with the marketing campaign as they’ve hired some pretty big stars. Football (Soccer) star Steven Gerrard and Zachary Quinto, as Spock, appear to promote the multimedia capabilities of the console. There are also cameos from Titanfall, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse: Son of Rome.
Microsoft has not revealed how much money they are spending on the marketing campaign. However, The Guardian has heard that they are spending up to $100 million. It is indeed the largest amount they have ever spent on a console, but it’s only a fraction of the $500 million marketing campaign they had for the Kinect back in 2010.
Sony has already began an aggressive marketing push focusing on the games. They’ve already release two ads; one called ‘Perfect Day’ featuring The Elder Scrolls Online, Driveclub and Killzone: Shadow Fall and ‘For the Players Since 1995’ that highlights many of PlayStation’s greatest moments since the original console launched in 1995.
The completely different takes on marketing solidify the fact that Sony and Microsoft are focusing on different things with their brand new consoles. Microsoft is going more of the multimedia route and Sony is sticking with the games. Though, Xbox One will still be a great game-playing machine and the PS4 will be a great multimedia machine. Only time will tell which marketing campaign will be more successful.
Xbox One is out November 22 worldwide in 13 countries. PS4 is out November 15 in North America and November 29 in Europe in 32 countries. Check out the ad below:
