We’ve known for a while that there will be a day 1 update available for Xbox One on November 22. Today, Microsoft has confirmed that your Xbox One will not be useable until the update is complete.
Senior Director of Product Management Albert Penello confirmed the news to Engadget that you’ll be able to do, “Nothing. You need the day one update.”
“A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn’t have even been done. You’re gonna need to take this update. It’s not gonna be really an optional thing.
“Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update.”
Now before anyone gets angry about this we need to remember that most devices nowadays need Day 1 updates. Sony has already confirmed that players will need to download a Day 1 update for the PS4. The Wii U also had a day 1 update last year.
What Microsoft hasn’t stated is how big this update is and if you can play games as the update downloads. Sony has confirmed that the PS4 update is only a mere 300mb and Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida recently confirmed that players will be able to play their brand new PS4 games as it downloads. On the other end of the spectrum is the Wii U day 1 update, which came in at a whopping 5GB.
Xbox One is out November 22 worldwide in 13 countries.
