Surprise! Without warning, Square Enix has announced they will be releasing Final Fantasy VIII on Steam later today. Well it’s not completely without warning as PC users have been digging up database entries for the title for nearly a year now, but this is the first time Square has even alluded to the possibility of re-releasing the game on PC.
Considering the seventh installment into the popular franchise did incredibly well earlier this year, it’s not all that shocking Square would want to revamp and package up another older title. The Steam version of Final Fantasy VIII will cost $11.99 and includes Steam cloud support, 45 unique achievements and is optimized for modern PCs. Unfortunately, this is probably where it stops as IX and the games forward did not receive PC ports, unless Square Enix is hiding something.
