Sony Shutting Down Online Support For Gran Turismo 5 and Resistance Among Other Titles

The time of the PS3 has ended.  While the console will still recieve strong support from third-parties for the next few years we won’t be seeing anything from Sony as they focus all their efforts on the PS4.  As such, Sony is cutting off online support for a multitude of older games.  You can check out the full list of decommissioned games at the PlayStation website.

Easily the most popular games on the list are Gran Turismo 5 and the Resistance titles.  Gran Turismo 5, the best-selling PS3 exclusive of all time, will end on May 20, 2014.  Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 end two months earlier on March 28, 2014.  Resistance: Fall of Man has been playable since the PS3 launched in 2006 and is among the best-selling PS3 exclusives with about 5 million units sold.  Its sequels couldn’t replicate its success.

Sony is also shutting down Zipper Interactive’s catalog of games.  Both MAG and Socom 4 will meet their end on January 28, 2014.  Socom: Confrontation, which was developed by Slant Six Games, will end the same day.

This doesn’t mean that the games won’t become unplayable as long as they have single-player or local Co-Op modes.  Only MAG and Socom: Confrontation will be rendered unplayable due to them being multiplayer only games.
