Snoop Lion’s Game-Themed Video is Awful and Could Be Canned

I can’t remember the last time a hip-hop rapper released a music video that only contained video game elements throughout the whole thing, but the rapper-turned-Rasta Snoop Lion (formerly Snoop Dogg) seems to have put that to rest with the release of his newest video for his “Get Away” single.

The song is catchy and rhythmic, great for the club and the gym. However, the video is another species all on its own. Lion engages in what could possibly be a pseudo-Pokemon battle with record producer Major Lazer, followed by an equally weird side scrolling aircraft shoot ‘em up. The final boss at the end is a yellow, stereo system. Speakers with eyeballs included.

It’s a nice concept on paper, but the execution is quite below average. The video doesn’t fit the song in the slightest and subsequently doesn’t have the potential to connect to gamers in the way that it was is clearly aiming for. This video could have gone a better route, considering that the one for “No Guns Allowed” and “Here Comes the King” was pretty decent. “Get Away,” however, seems to have received the short end of the stick.

Other than that, the effects of Nintendo’s itchy trigger finger can’t be too far away. Some sort of cease and desist order from the company may ensue due to some of the likeness in the video. Indeed, Lion’s latest creation might get taken down and perhaps a bit harder than Chris Weidman’s take down of Anderson Silva at UFC 168. Ya’ll remember when that happened, right?

But that’s neither here nor there. For now we can sort of laugh and enjoy it while it lasts.

Snoop Lion’s “Reincarnated” album is available now on iTunes.  Peep the video below.
