The much beloved Final Fantasy X is getting its HD remaster in March, but it isn’t thanks to Square Enix. While previously believed to have been developed in-house like Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, it has now been revealed that development for Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster was outsourced to Chinese developer Virtuos.
This was revealed by Virtuos themselves by a post on their website. The developer describes this as their biggest project. Virtuos is a studio specializing in 3D art and game software development for consoles and mobile devices. The studio has worked on a wide range of titles helping to bring them to other platforms.
It appears that the only thing that Square Enix did was provide Virtuos with the code and assets to make the HD Remaster. Final Fantasy X is one of the best-selling Final Fantasy games ever and is held in high esteem among the fanbase. Many consider it the last great Final Fantasy game created. While Virtuos most likely have done a fantastic job, it is a disappointment to see Square Enix throw one of its top games away to another developer.
Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster is out March 18 exclusively on PS3 and PS Vita.
