The Dreamcast is the console that never dies, and we say that with an ear-to-ear smile plastered on our face. Not only is the DC one of our all-time favorite systems, it’s also home to a profusion of shoot ’em up games. With gems such as Mars Matrix, Ikaruga, Borderdown and Psyvariar 2 (just to name a few), Sega’s little-engine-that-could has an incredible library of SHMUP goodness. The best part is, some of its shooters were, and still are being released long after it’s retail dirge. While we already reported on one forthcoming SHMUP scheduled for a Dreamcast release later this year, this news is meant to inform everyone that there are in fact two more on the way.
Redux: Dark Matters is first up on the docket, and is the product of a very successful Kickstarter campaign. Redux features high-res visuals and robot-blasting chaos that spans seven stages, each of which is capped off with an obligatory boss battle. Of course, those who follow the SHMUP community are already familiar with Redux’s NG:DEV.TEAM, as they’re the guys responsible for other shooter gems such as GunLord, Fast Striker, Last Hope and DUX.
The second Dreamcast title in question is one we’re particularly anticipating. Ghost Blade is a shoot ’em up that focuses strictly on arcade action brilliance and elaborate scoring systems. With three playable ships from which to choose, and three types of game modes including the ‘5 stage mode’, ‘challenging caravan mode’and time attack, Ghost Blade is as full featured as it is drop-dead gorgeous.
Both games will release in standard and limited edition forms for $44.99 and $89.99 respectively. Redux: Dark Matters is slated for launch in just three days time, while Ghost Blade won’t hit shelves until later this year in October. For a look at what each has to offer, scope the screens below. To say that Ghost Blade is beautiful would be an understatement of epic proportions.
