Minecraft is one of the biggest Indie success stories ever. Starting with no more than a basic idea, Markus “Notch” Persson crafted a rich, open-ended experience that millions of gamers mold into unique fantasy worlds each day. It’s a game that has clearly resonated with gamers around the world, especially considering its sales.
Notch recently tweeted the news that, “The computer version of Minecraft has now sold 14 million copies,” and that he’d be “celebrating by having no idea how to play Lego marvel on ps4.”
While there’s currently no conclusive information regarding the sales across every platform, one could easily draw an estimate based on sales reports released in the past. Since its launch, Minecraft: PS3 Edition has sold 1 million units, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sold 10 million, and Minecraft: Pocket Edition has sold 10 million units. A quick calculation brings us to 35 million units sold worldwide.
Minecraft is currently set to release on PS4 and Xbox One sometime later this year.
