New X Combat Footage Shown Off, Mouths Water

By our evaluation, X is the Wii U’s smoking gun. The RPG from Monolith Soft, the developers of perhaps one of the best roleplaying games of last generation, Xenoblade: Chronicles, has been shrouded in a cloak of mystery since its first unveiling many moons ago. While its debut-showing looked pretty impressive, we weren’t able to see a lot of true-to-life gameplay. Thankfully, that changed today with the Big N’s latest Nintendo Direct.

In the video, we are shown just over two-minutes of how the game will play in terms of combat. From the footage, we clearly see that Xenoblade has played a influencing role in X’s battling system. Part real-time, part turn-based, it would seem that combat is a blend of action and strategy — much like its predecessor. As the montage demonstrates, folks can even jump in mechs and mow down people from inside its cockpit. Impressive, indeed!

There’s still not a release date for X, but we’re hoping that it finds a home in the year 2014. The Wii U could certainly use a game of this caliber sooner rather than later. So here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long.
