One Piece Unlimited World Red Sets Sail to the West

Avid fans of Shonen Jump’s versatile library of manga such as Naruto and Bleach will be ecstatic to learn that the long-armed, straw hat protagonist and his pirate friends will be appearing in the form of a full-fledged RPG developed by Ganbarion Co., Ltd and will be released to the states this year on several platforms, as announced by Namco Bandai today.

After the publisher’s huge backing for so many Naruto Shippuden and Dragon Ball Z fighters, we all should have seen yet another One-Piece title coming our way. However, the switch in game genre and the updated art style may prove to pique interest in even gamers who are non-obsessive over the franchise. Players will be given the chance to experience the “the complete Pirate adventure” with Luffy and company, battling off against gigantic creatures and menacing foes. The game will also allow for some mini games such as catching butterflies and fishing.

In addition to a batch of drool worthy screenshots, Namco Bandai also dropped a trailer to supplement their announcement. Judging from the gameplay, the combat system seems to be free-roaming and also calls to mind of a Kingdom Hearts play style in terms of engaging with enemies. Your party will battle alongside you, but there seems to be no other indication of whether or not you can switch between them.Co-op gameplay will be included as well; up to 4 players locally on the 3DS and PS Vita and a split screen two player for WiiU and PS3.

One Piece Unlimited World Red looks gorgeous and the fact that the publisher is looking to expand accessibility by releasing the game on the PS Vita, PlayStation 3, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS is telling of their reception of where their core fanbase lies.At the moment, there is no release date but Namco Bandai is holding on to a “later in 2014” window.
