Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of both Rockstar and 2K Games, has confirmed that the BioShock franchise is not dead. The franchise will now be developed by 2K Marin, a company that BioShock fans should know very well.
2K Marin were the developers of BioShock 2, which received positive reviews, but was not considered anywhere near as good as the first game. However, aside from the recently dissolved Irrational Games, 2K Marin knows the most about the franchise and should do well with the IP.
“We haven’t given any color on how you should think about it yet except we do believe [BioShock] is beloved; we think it’s important [and] certainly something that we’re focused on; something 2K Marin will be responsible for shepherding going forward,” Take-Two Interactive President Strauss Zelnick said at the Cowen and Company analyst conference. “I don’t want to say much else except to agree with you. I think there’s a lot of upside in that franchise.”
The future of the franchise was left unknown when Irrational Games as we knew it was closed down. Only a few members of the studio are staying with Studio Head Ken Levine to create smaller, story-focused games.
