While we’re definitely hearing a lot about next-gen consoles flaunting photorealistic environments and facial expressions that are actually exiting the uncanny valley, leave it to a fresh indie developer to produce a game that blows its hyper-realistic peers out of the water.
Enter Studio MDHR, formed by Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, and their upcoming debut game Cuphead.
MDHR dropped a new trailer for Cuphead at E3 2014, showing off run-and-gun gameplay, classy jazzy piano themes, and some of the most impressive graphic design seen at E3 2014 so far. Echoing the “rubber hose” animation style of the 1920’s and 30’s, the brief trailer boasts plenty of cartoon charm, vivid colors and buttery-smooth animation. The art in Cuphead was designed with traditional cel animation, meaning all of the art in the game was produced by hand.
While the trailer doesn’t offer too much footage aside from some wacky Mega Man-esque boss encounters, the expressive characters and incredible accuracy to the animation of yesteryear makes the game pop on all fronts.
Cuphead is set to be released on PC and Xbox One in 2015, with further platforms still being considered for release later on.
