The first time I met Tim Schafer, I apologized to him for pirating Grim Fandango. He told me it was okay, and that it’s something he hears a lot. Lucasarts owned the rights, after all, and they weren’t exactly interested in dipping back into the adventure market. For years, the point and click classic has been available only through the bittorrent marketplace. Now a new generation of gamers (like the totally real Sally T. who wrote a letter to Sony and definitely isn’t Tim Schafer using his normal everyday handwriting) will have a chance to play it, thanks to a collaboration between Sony, Double Fine, and Disney (the new owners of Lucasarts).
The game is being remastered for PS4 and Vita, which I assume means we’ll see an upgrade to its timeless Catrina Doll art style. As a hardcore Tim Schafer fan, I, for one, could not be more excited. Grim Fandango is one of his best games, and its direct controls are perfectly suited to consoles.
Update: Tim Schafer announced via twitter that the Grim Fandango remaster will be coming to other platforms. Whether this means PC and Mobile or other consoles remains to be seen.
