E3 2014: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker Boasts Beauty and Puzzles

Last years’s Super Mario 3D World is without a doubt one of the Wii U’s best games, but many fans took particular interest in the unique Captain Toad levels scattered throughout the game. But if there was one complaint fan’s had about the levels, it was that there simply weren’t enough of them. Luckily, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is on its way to Wii U this holiday season, and Nintendo’s Treehouse showed off a demo for the game earlier today.

Much like the levels in Super Mario 3D World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker set players loose on a variety of puzzling levels in search of treasure. However, Toad is unable to ┬ájump, and is therefore defenseless against any enemies he encounters. The player must manipulate the camera angle and engage with the environment to collect every gem and star, and it all makes for a more “cerebral” challenge than traditional Mario games. The levels shown revealed a surprising amount of variety, too; some very clever gamepad-based puzzles involving moving platforms and an odd first-person radish shooting segment were the highlights, as well as a gorgeous level pitting Toad against a fire-breathing dragon. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker looks colorful, bright, and deceptively simple, and its holiday 2014 release can’t come soon enough.
