E3 2014: Nintendo introduces Amiibo

Shortly after announcing Mii’s for Super Smash Bros, Nintendo unveiled the Amiibo, a figurine that acts as a fancy memory card modeled after a Smash Bros character.

The Amiibo will store information about each player and bring that to a new Wii U upon touching it to a gamepad.

Launching in the holiday season, these new figurines will give people a new way to transfer data and play among friends, which is especially potent, since Nintendo announced that the name is derived from the French word for “friend.”

Smash Bros will be the first game to support Amiibo, with games like Mario Kart sure to follow.
