Production start-up of the next game in the Yakuza franchise was announced yesterday, and both Supervisor Toshihiro Nagoshi and Producer Masayoshi Yokoyama of the series have confirmed that the yet-to-be-named title will be headed to both of Sony’s consoles, the PS3 and PS4. Conceivably this could be called Yakuza 6, as this will not be a spin off such as Yakuza Of The End or Yakuza Restoration, but neither would confirm if this would be 6, or have a different naming convention entirely.
As it has in the past, the new Yakuza game will feature urban environments around Japan, it is interesting to note, the development staff is currently holding auditions to select people who will play the in-game role of city dwellers, aimed at the target demographic of single men as they are aiming for the game to be well-received by the male audience. This isn’t a huge departure from the rest of the games in the series I suppose, but Yakuza 5 did feature Haruka as a playable character for the first time, so there was at least acknowledgement of the female gamer audience previously. Obviously with things in such early stages, it’s yet to be seen exactly what changes if any will come from targeting single males as their primary audience for this game.
Speaking of Yakuza 5, however, SEGA I’m looking at you. We have yet to see this title come to North America, and it came out in Japan almost 2 years ago already. Make it happen, and fast, so we can all be as excited as you are about the next iteration of your amazing and over-the-top brawler franchise.
