Independent Darling ‘Cuphead’ Will Be a Trilogy

Though E3 2014 produced a ton of hype for massive games like No Man’s Sky, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, and our Game of Show Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, one of the most intriguing titles shown was a cartoon-style run-and-gun shooter. Cuphead, the long-in-development title from StudioMDHRwas teased during the ID@Xbox section of Microsoft’s well-regarded press conference, and good Lord does it look bizarre. Looking like a colorful, playable version of a 1920’s Mickey Mouse Cartoon, Cuphead appears to be one of the flagship independent games coming to the Xbox One in the near future. Kill Screen Daily recently obtained information from developers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer on the state of the game’s development.

Because the two-man team designed the art before implementing the game’s mechanics (which are currently being developed), the game is only roughly forty percent complete. The Moldenhauers have been working on Cuphead since 2010, so a delay past its 2015 Xbox One and PC release date does not seem entirely out of the question at this point. StudioMDHR is aiming for the game to be a trilogy, meaning that, if all goes well, the Xbox One could have a massive indie hit series on its hands. The developers envision using a series of expansion packs that build upon the original weapons and mechanics to build Cuphead into its ultimate form. In terms of how the game will play, Cuphead will be a fast-paced, side-scrolling shooter built around boss battles. Rather than simply having a series of light shooting sequences in between each boss battle, the game will look to make every moment epic and enthralling though this world building technique.

Hopefully we will see more of Cuphead in the near future, as it is very obviously one of the most interesting titles currently in development.
