Lionel Messi has been revealed as the cover athlete for FIFA 15, the latest entry in EA’s enormously popular soccer franchise. It will be the Argentine star’s third consecutive year as the series’ lead athlete, after several years with FIFA’s direct competitor Pro Evolution Soccer. Messi, largely regarded as the best soccer player on the planet, has enjoyed a record-shattering career, banging in goals left and right and helping his club Barcelona to multiple domestic and European championships. However, Messi’s Argentina lost to Germany in last Sunday’s World Cup final, souring what could have been a perfect opportunity for EA to utilize the player’s image. Messi did, however, win the Golden Ball honor, awarded to the best player of the tournament, so it’s not all bad. FIFA 15 will launch on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on September 23.
