Steam Tags were introduced in February as a new way to help players find games they might like to play. Although there was a rocky start thanks to crude tags, Valve have continued to work out the best implementation of Steam Tags.
The tagging service is finally out of beta alongside a few changes. First, user tagging in languages other than English has currently been revoked due to the high volume of joke tags applied. Instead, English tags will be translated into all other supported languages by Valve’s team. Super broad tags such as “fun” have also been removed.
Finally, they are now seeking to cut down on similar tags such as “mod-friendly” versus “moddable.” Now, users that try to enter a common tag variation will be directed to use a specific other tag instead. Although Steam Tags have left beta Valve is continuing to monitor and tweak the system.
