The long-running Age of Empires series is getting a brand-new installment, though not in the form that many expected. Microsoft announced Age of Empires: Castle Siege, a free-to-play game for Windows Phone and Windows 8.1 devices, and offered up a fresh trailer.
Developed by Smoking Gun Interactive, the game will focus on building different castles and fortresses, while also gathering resources for the fortresses and attacking enemy strongholds. You can select different units to attack or defend your bastion of choice, while reenacting iconic battles from history such as the Fall of Constantinople.
The game will support Xbox Live friends for “alliances”, leaderboards, and cross-platform play between Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. The game has also been confirmed to have in-game purchases to “accelerate gameplay.”
Castle Siege will have its first public demo at the upcoming PAX Prime in Seattle, but a separate preview with the developers will go live today at 1 pm PST on the Age of Empires Twitch channel.
Age of Empires: Castle Siege is set to release in September. Check out the trailer below.
