Nintendo’s Latest Free Pokémon is more Treat than Trick

Autumn means pumpkin EVERYTHING! If GameStop’s Pokémon distributions left you sour, Nintendo Network is doing things right by generously offering everyone a Pumpkaboo, the Pumpkin Pokémon, via wi-fi download. Why a Pumpkaboo? This Halloween-themed Pokémon evolves into Gourgeist, which is a required Pokémon to have on your team if you’re going to participate in this month’s Pokémon X and Y Online Competition. The competition, aptly titled the Trick-Or-Treat Friendly, is limited to only Ghost Pokémon, and Gourgeist must take up a slot in your Battle Box in order to qualify for participation. You can only pick three Pokémon to battle, so choose wisely.

This isn’t just any Pumpkaboo, either. It’s coming to you large and in charge in its Super-Sized form, meaning it’s the bulky tanky form of all 4 Pumpkaboo sizes. It sacrifices speed in order to gain more HP, which is the smartest way to go considering Pumpkaboo aren’t winning any races to begin with. It gets even better, though, when Super-Size Pumpkaboo evolves into Gourgeist, as there’s a nice attack boost to go along with it. Faster, smaller forms simply lack in Attack and HP. They can’t normally outclass a stronger, defensive Gourgeist.

How generous is it of Nintendo to give us the greater pumpkin? Charlie Brown would be jealous.

Pumpkaboo comes holding the always useful Rocky Helmet which damages any Pokémon that touches it. It can have the ability Pickup, Frisk, or Insomnia. Its learned moves are Trick-or-Treat, Astonish, Scary Face, and Shadow Sneak. Pumpkaboo arrives battle-ready at level 50, the max level of Online Competitions. With evolution, a few tweaks to its moveset, and perhaps soft-resetting for a desired nature and ability, you’re good to go for the Trick-Or-Treat Friendly. Yes, lazy trainers, this is the distribution you’ve been waiting for. Just get it soon, because it only lasts from October 1st to October 31st.

Pumpkaboo and Gourgeist are the only Ghost-types able to use Worry Seed which is a very effective move. Worry Seed changes an opponents’ ability to Insomnia which won’t let them sleep. We all know how much an ability can factor into a team, and changing one can throw off someone’s entire strategy. Since the Trick-or-Treat Friendly is all Ghost Pokémon, they’ll all be weak to one another. Some of which you’ll encounter more than others. Beefed up Special Defense is important in this type of match-up and, luckily, being Super-Sized will boost it. Even though Gourgeist are required to appear in your Battle Box, it’s not necessary to use one, but it’s not a terrible choice either.

Don’t forget to register for the Trick-Or-Treat Friendly. Participants who complete at least one battle receive five Rare Candy items after the competition, so there’s more trick than treat here. Sign-ups begin October 16th through the 23rd. You must be registered in the Pokémon Global Link (PGL) to do so. Check here for all the details.
