When it comes to JRPGS, “Unreal Engine” isn’t the first thing that springs to mind. After all, the engine has become synonymous with western games (especially considering it shares its name with a FPS), so it comes as a huge surprise that Kingdom Hearts 3 will now be developed with Unreal Engine 4. In an interview with Famitsu, Series Director Tetsuya Nomura stated that they’re on schedule but that development was shifted to use Unreal Engine. The move was said to stem from “various reasons,” although none of them were detailed besides the fact that they were struggling with aspects on the previous engine and that Epic Games has offered their full cooperation.
Kingdom Hearts 3 was previously being developed with the Square-Enix-designed Luminous engine.
