If you were hoping to use your Gamecube controller to play Wii U games other than Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, you’re out of luck. As it turns out, the upcoming Controller Adapter that allows players to use the classic controller with Super Smash Bros. will only work for that particular game.
Speculation ran rampant that Gamecube controllers could be used for other games when a post on the official Nintendo UK website declared that any game that supports the Wii Classic Controller, Wii Classic Controller Pro, and Wii U Pro Controller would also support a Gamecube controller. However, Nintendo has since amended the webpage to confirm that the adapter and controllers will work exclusively with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
“The GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically – it is not compatible with any other Wii U software,” a Nintendo spokesperson told IGN. “The adapter is also not compatible with Wii and we apologise for any confusion.”
This is bound to be a disappointment for fans of the Gamecube controller. It’s also disappointing that Nintendo is charging $20 for a peripheral that can only be used with one game. Hopefully the company will patch support for the adapter and future titles to make the peripheral more useful.
