20th Century Fox has set a release date for Michael Fassbender’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed film. Assassin’s Creed opens December 21, 2016 worldwide.
Assassin’s Creed stars Michael Fassbender in the leading role, and has Justin Kurzel directing. Long in development, it’s good to hear that the film has a set release date after being delayed from its original 2015 release date. Though we still have no idea what the film will be about. Whether it will be an adaptation of an Assassin’s Creed game, or an original story is anyone’s guess.
Despite being over a year away, Assassin’s Creed is already facing intense competition. As the Hollywood Reporter notes, an untitled Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me franchise) will open alongside Assassin’s Creed. An untitled Star Wars spin-off film launches the week before. This will be the true test to see if Assassin’s Creed can transcend the games industry and establish itself as a multimedia juggernaut.
