Sony is opening up multiplayer for all PlayStation 4 users this weekend, the company announced today. Online multiplayer on PS4 has typically required a PlayStation Plus membership, which costs $50/year and also nets you six free games per month in addition to deeper discounts during sales, but Sony is allowing non-Plus members to get a taste of online multiplayer action for free.
It’s a smart move from Sony, mimicking Microsoft’s frequent free weekends from its paid service Xbox Live, and benefits players and Sony alike. Anyone grabbing Battlefield Hardline this week who isn’t a Plus member can still enjoy the online multiplayer with friends for a weekend, or hop into one of the new Grand Theft Auto V online heists, or rent Destiny for the weekend.
So if you’ve got a multiplayer itch to scratch on PS4 but haven’t signed up for Plus yet, this weekend is your chance. The free weekend starts this Friday, March 20 at 12:01 a.m. PST and ends Sunday, March 22 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
