Tearaway became such a surprise critical hit for Media Molecule, though Vita players haven’t completely embraced it, if its abysmal sales numbers are any indication. Now, a retelling of that story is hitting the PlayStation 4 with Tearaway Unfolded, and it will be bigger and better than the first. The team felt the Tearaway wasn’t even close to being finished, so they took this opportunity to add another chapter to this third-person platforming game.
Originally launched for PS Vita, Tearaway used some revolutionary gameplay mechanics, so with Tearaway Unfolded coming to PS4, there had to be ways to utilize the DualShock 4 controller. Media Molecule makes good use of the touchpad by allowing players to control gusts of wind that affects the world on-screen whether it’s to solve puzzles or change the shape of platforms. It’ll feel like you have godlike powers to manipulate such a fragile environment. The PS4 controller’s light bar is used in the game to shine like a flashlight in darker areas. It actually appears on-screen in a triangular shape like it does on the controller. You can also use attacks anytime you feel to play Unfolded the way you want without holding back, which allows for a more personal experience.
Playing Tearaway Unfolded will seem familiar, and that’s because it is. Media Molecule chose to stick with the same storyline as the first, but the quirky studio is definitely giving it quite the content update. Areas in Unfolded are larger, there are more side storyline quests, trickier enemies to beat and some sections have new endings. Taking photos became a popular feature in Tearaway, leading the PS4 version to contain to more filters to use as well as a GIF maker There’s even support with the PlayStation App to share those photos with others, as well as send content or items to the game world itself.
The characters in Tearaway Unfolded have had a lot more details added to their animations, which should make the proceedings even more adorable. They realize that the fourth wall is being completely shattered and that there’s someone sitting in front of the screen controlling them. Atoi and Iota will keep looking over their shoulder, waiting on your every move. They can even toss you objects to use on the backgrounds and give them a clearer pathway.
Tearaway Unfolded will support trophies, which could be a bit of incentive for those dedicated achievement hunters. There are a few pre-order outfits you could obtain as we speak if you know you’re going to buy the game when t launches on September 8 for North America, and a day later in Europe. You may have been through this adventure before, but a whole new story is unfolding right before your eyes.
