Pokémon fans sure are getting a wide cast of playable characters in the upcoming arcade fighter Pokkén Tournament. The last big reveal showed of the Ghost/Poison-type Pokémon Gengar, but now we’ve got two veterans when it comes to the fighting genre. Both Weavile and Charizard have been officially announced as playable characters in Pokkén Tournament.
Weavile made its fighting debut as an assist Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but this time it’s unleashing fury on its own opponents. The Dark/Ice-type has high speed and attack as evident in its debut trailer for the game. See Weavile close in on opponents before delivering fatal swipes with Ice Punch and a devastating Night Slash to finish them off. It may look cute and cat-like, but it’s definitely a tough Pokémon to go up against.
Also making its debut in the Super Smash Bros. series as in a Pokéball, then as part of a team in Brawl, and later on its own in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, is Charizard. This fan favorite has been a monster in all forms of competitive Pokémon games from trading cards to battling online. In his Pokkén Tournament trailer you can see Charizard decimate opponents with brutal force and making quick work of them with Flare Blitz. But that’s not all: Charizard then Mega Evolves to annihilate its foes without breaking a sweat.
Japanese gamers get to play Pokkén Tournament in arcades starting July 16. So far there has been no release date or plans for a North American version of the game. That didn’t stop us from coming up with a list of hopeful competitors looking to make their mark by going a few rounds.
