Nintendo has issued a statement today announcing that company CEO Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55. The statement reads:
Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.
Iwata first began working with Nintendo in the 1980s, helping with the production of games like Balloon Fight, Earthbound, and Kirby’s Dream Land, before he succeeded long-time president Hiroshi Yamauchi in 2002. Iwata’s passion for Nintendo was immeasurable. He embodied the fun and joy the company perpetually pumped into the industry, and was responsible for millions of smiles throughout his tenure.
Thank you, Mr. Iwata.
