When Sony released the PlayStation 4 back in 2014, they revamped their PlayStation Plus. subscription service. To play online multiplayer on the PS4, players have to be subscribed to PS+, but it also provides online backup for licenses and save games, and the best part is free games. Of course they aren’t really free because PS+ is a paid service, but it’s undeniably cheap. Two PS4 games, two PS3 games and two PS Vita games; it’s a sweet setup.
PlayStation Plus has thrown a lot of good games out there, including many indie games that may not have gotten the audience they deserve if it weren’t for the promotion. Some examples of the games PlayStation owners have been able to get include Resogun, Don’t Starve, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeros, Towerfall Ascension, Injustice: Gods Among Us, and many, many more. All of these games have been great, but one stands above the rest. And that is this month’s Rocket League.
Rocket League, for those who don’t know, is a game based on driving rocket-powered cars around a large stadium essentially playing soccer. The cars can double jump, boost and even ride up on the walls as they chase after the oversized ball in the oversized stadium. The game goes up to 4 versus 4 and will put in bots (oddly talented bots) for spots that the severs can’t fill.
The thing that makes Rocket League so great is the team aspect. I got on with two of my friends, and we played a couple matches and were quickly discouraged. We were getting destroyed by everyone, one time even by a team made up of one person and two bots, but we decided to keep playing, but this time we had to come up with a strategy. We lost maybe one or two more, but we were getting the hang of the game, and after that, we got pretty darn good. We ended up playing for way too long into the night, and we were having a really good time.
That’s the other thing about Rocket League; it’s hilarious. It’s just a bunch of silly looking, customizable cars driving around jumping at a ball and trying to push it into a goal. Your cars can wear hats, they can be pink or have pink flames coming out the back and there are silly toppers to put on the car antenna. Getting a good shot at the goal makes you jump out of your chair and hearing your friends crack up at the replay is just a ton of fun. No other game offered by PS+ has had this good and unique of an idea that was made for online multiplayer, and it has really been the most fun I’ve had with a free game.
Rocket League is a PlayStation Plus offer for the month of July along with Entwined, Styx, Driveclub, Mousecraft, Rain and Geometry Wars 3. Check it out before it goes away in August.
