Open-world, dinosaur island-themed Steam Early Access MMO survival game ARK: Survival Evolved got a ARK Dev Kit today and a new tournament battle mode called Survival of the Fittest.
The ARK Dev Kit is the go-to tool set for creating mods for ARK: Survival Evolved. More specifically, it is a modified, streamlined version of the Unreal Engine 4 Editor made specifically for the simplified creation and sharing of mods for ARK. Modders can use it to generate items, weapons, different creatures and monster, and even entire game modes or maps. Talented modders may want to participate in the Alienware-sponsored “ARK: Survival Evolved Modding Contest” which also started today. The competition is to use the ARK Dev Kit to make a new mod that best fits and exemplifies the contest judging criteria. The three top-placing competitors will win a nice load of cash and some high-quality graphics cards:
● Grand Prize (1st Place): $15,000 USD, Alienware Area-51 Desktop, and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti Graphics Card
● 2nd Place: $5,000 USD, Alienware X51 Desktop, and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 Graphics Card
● 3rd Place: $2,500 USD and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 Graphics Card
Entry for the contest closes October 6.
To show off their creation, developer Studio Wildcard has also created a total conversion mod in the shape of competitive game mode Survival of the Fittest (SoTF). In SoTF, players are placed on a modified version of the ARK island where the objective is to murder all the other players Hunger Games-style. The map is surrounded by a dome-shaped barrier that shrinks as the match goes on, while activities and progression events – like leveling, gathering, taming creatures, and even building – all finish at a faster rate. There are of course hostile creatures in the arena with the players but also Evolution Events that happen every thirty minutes like abnormal weather, air-dropped dinosaurs, day-night shifts, and even reveals of a player’s location. The entire mode was made using the ARK Dev Kit, so despite its intrigue and creativity, it is only an example of what the modding tools are capable of.
