Destiny: How To Prepare For The Taken King

Hello Guardians! Today we’re going to look at some of the different things you can do to prepare yourself for the upcoming Destiny expansion, The Taken King. Destiny has a lot to do in it despite what people say, and there are a lot of things to level up or rank up, so maybe you haven’t finished up all there is to accomplish. With The Taken King, Bungie is going to look at all your gear and start you at the highest possible level you can be, so 34 is something to strive for. Here are some activities that will help you get you where you need to be on September 15.

First and most obviously are the Moments of Triumph. Bungie gave Year 1 players a way to see just how much they’ve accomplished in the first year of playing Destiny, and if you haven’t been at least trying everything the game has to offer, you very well might be behind on your Triumphs. The Triumphs include beating the vanilla story along with both of the DLC stories and raid bosses, getting all of the gold chests, doing 50 public events, winning 100 Crucible matches and killing Skolas in the level 35 Prison of Elders. Getting all of these things done is one of the biggest things you can do to prove that you are a true, hardcore Destiny player, and you even get a cool shader and emblem afterwards, so that helps with incentive. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t get them done before the 15th, though; it’s a lot to doand killing Skolas will take a long time.

MOT Destiny
The next thing you could do is level up your exotic weapons. Bungie said in last Wednesday’s Year 2 stream that only a couple exotics would be upgradable in the new expansion. Exempt from that list are guns like Thorn, Vex Mythoclast and even Gjallarhorn, which means that Guardians will have to find a new favorite weapon. So the problem is knowing which exotics to level up. Say your Red Death isn’t leveled. Red Death will be upgradeable in TTK, but the way you do it is different. You’ll go to the exotic weapon kiosk in the Tower and look for the new version of Red Death. You’ll buy it using the new Legendary Marks, but the upgrade tree will be reset. So even though you’ve spent the time leveling up the old Red Death, you have to do it again, although you won’t have to do all the attack upgrade, as they have gotten rid of those. So should you level up that Red Death right now? Probably not. But say you have an unleveled Gjallarhorn; you could level that up, because there’s no going higher, and have it fully leveled just to say you do. And Gjallarhorn will still be useful during Year 1 activities like the raids or Prison of Elders. They have not confirmed all of the guns that are either coming or not coming into Year 2, but the Destiny community has deciphered some. Definitely coming over are Red Death, Suros Regime, The Last Word, Thunderlord, Truth, Invective and Patience and Time. Guns that aren’t include Gjallarhorn, Thorn, Vex Mythoclast, No Land Beyond, Super Good Advice, Universal Remote and Ice Breaker.

Power leveling your characters will also really help. Getting all three classes to level 34 will make it easier to get to the new cap of level 40 as quickly as possible, which is obviously the goal. This will be easier if you play all one class, say three Warlocks, but there is more incentive than ever to play all three classes because of the exclusive missions and quests each one has and even some of the new weapon types will be exclusive to a certain class. Don’t start a new character just yet; with The Taken King, they are revamping the original story, the two DLC stories and all of the strikes, which means that when you play through on September 15, there will be slight changes that will make the play through a lot more enjoyable. New characters will also be given boosts when upon first logging into The Taken King, which will boost your new character all the way to level 25, and you can run through the story missions quickly as to get to the new stuff. So if you have a 34 Titan and two 34 Hunters, delete one Hunter, but don’t start your new Warlock until the release of the expansion.

Subclasses
Next you could do some smaller, side quest type things. One of the biggest ones, time consumption-wise, would be Ghost hunting. Finding dead ghosts give you Grimoire cards and points, and although this does not help your character, having a high Grimoire score is a good bragging right, and reading the cards is actually interesting. You could also stock up on Vanguard and Crucible Marks, because with The Taken King, these marks will be turned in to Vanguard and Crucible commendations which boost your rank, and the commendations could also drop new loot, and who doesn’t love new loot.

And the most important thing of all: do not discard anything. If you like a legendary gun like Fatebringer, but are thinking “well, it’s going to be useless in a couple of weeks, better scrap it now,” don’t. Fatebringer will still be useful when doing Vault of Glass, Crota’s End and even Prison of Elders. You could also use it in balanced Crucible where Attack stats don’t matter, so there are still uses for it. Same for armor. Don’t delete the Helm of Saint-14; it’s still great.

There are only about three weeks until the release of The Taken King, but there is a lot you can still get done. If you’re having trouble getting a group to play with, try using an LFG (Looking For Group) site. There’s The 100, or DestinyLFG or even the Destiny reddit page. There will be tons of other Guardians looking for some friends to help them out. The Taken King expansion is looking to be super exciting; getting ready may take some time, but it will be worth it in the end.
