EA and Dice have given us our first glimpse of The Battle of Jakku, the first expansion for Star Wars: Battlefront. The Battle of Jakku will be 100% free to everyone who purchases the game, though anyone who pre-orders will get the DLC a week early on December 1.
The Battle of Jakku was a pivotal moment in the Star Wars universe. On Jakku, the New Republic laid siege to a key Imperial holdout on the desert planet. The results of The Battle of Jakku can be seen in the upcoming film, Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Players will get to experience the conflict first-hand before they head to the theatres to see the film.
The released images may only be concept art, but they give us a good idea of what to expect from the map. Obviously we have the crashed Star Destroyer whose shadow looms over the whole battlefield. For gameplay, players will be using debris that has fallen from the sky for cover.
“There’s a David and Goliath theme to this,” says Dice Concept Artist Anton Grandert. “The epic, huge super structures of the Star Destroyers contrast against the tiny but brave Rebel soldiers fighting the Imperial forces.”
“We wanted to portray a battle completely surrounding you, in every direction. Debris is falling from the sky, telling the story of battles above. On the surface of the planet you can see ground troops as well as X-wings, all taking part of the fight,” Grandert says.
Jakku is the fifth planet confirmed for Star Wars: Battlefront. Players will fight on iconic Original Trilogy planets Hoth, Tatooine, and Endor and on the brand new planet, Sullust. Star Wars: Battlefront is out November 17 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
